John Edwards is a retired partner in the firm’s litigation section. Prior to his retirement, Mr. Edwards served as Chairman of the firm’s litigation section. With more than 45 years devoted to insurance defense litigation, John’s extensive experience includes all types of personal injury claims, such as medical malpractice, products liability, premises liability, and automobile personal injury. Furthermore, he has handled a wide range of business-litigation issues, including landlord/tenant relations, condemnations, and agricultural commodities. In addition to representing third-party claims, John has defended first-party claims on coverage issues, as well as claims for bad faith damages. Under John’s leadership, the firm has represented MAG Mutual Insurance Company, the doctor-formed and -owned insurance company in the State of Georgia, since its inception in 1982. John also represented The Doctor’s Company, which is the largest medical professional liability insurance company in the country.

John graduated cum laude from Emory University in 1968 and received his Juris Doctor degree from the Walter F. George School of Law at Mercer University in 1972, where he graduated magna cum laude and first in his class. In law school, John served as the lead articles editor of the Mercer Law Review and as a founding member of the Brainerd Currie Honor Society.

John is a current member of the State Bar of Georgia, the Federal Bar Association and the Macon Bar Association (where he has served as president). John was a member of the Defense Research Institute and serves as a barrister emeritus in the William Augustus Bootle American Inn of Court. He is a fellow of the American College of Trial Lawyers, the Federation of Insurance and Corporate Counsel, and the Lawyers Foundation of Georgia. John also is a past member of the U.S. Supreme Court Historical Society. He was recognized by Cambridge Who’s Who as outstanding lawyer of the year in medical malpractice for 2009 and was also named  Lawyer of the Year in Medical Malpractice Law (Defense) for 2014 by Best Lawyers in America. Additionally, he has served as a special master for the State Disciplinary Board, as counsel to the Macon Chamber of Commerce, and as vice president of the Georgia Defense Lawyers Association. He has served as President of Mountain Club at Cashiers, NC Association. He has been listed in Georgia’s Super Lawyers for over 10 years and the National Directory of Who’s Who. John is a certified mediator by the State of Georgia.
